Fraternal Organizations, Legions and VFWs
Charlie first set foot in the American Legion post in his home town of Quincy, Illinois at age fourteen. The Legion sponsored the "Flying Dutchmen" drum and bugle corp where he learned his rudiments on the snare drum. The corp taught music, marching and ended up with road trips around the state and finally to Chicago for the DCI competition. His father was a veteran and both his uncles in WW II. Charlie has performed in American Legions, VFW's, Elks Lodge, Shriners, Moose Lodges, Labor Temple and Eagles Aeries throughout the United States as well as Veterans Hospitals. The Moose Lodge in Quincy was one of his first on stage gigs at age sixteen as well as the North and South Side Boat clubs on the river. He played alongside keyboardist Matt King who later went on to perform with Blood Sweat and Tears.
Country club gigs as well as the local night clubs led to corporate and grandstand shows and eventually state fair shows. The high school dances for proms and home coming were always fun and sock hops were soon fading out with the times. The fraternal and Legion clubs taught him music from another era and would come in handy many years later in assisted living centers and oldies shows on the road. Playing the "Surf" ballroom in Clear Lake, Iowa taught the basics of what oldies rock and roll should be and who the key players were back in the day. Charlie also played the Casino circuit throughout the USA and added material from Jerry Lee Lewis, Ricky Nelson, The Everley Brothers and Buddy Holly! Playing the oldies shows at the grandstand put him face to face, on stage with groups like "The Crickets", "Danny & the Juniors", "Bobby Vee" and many others!
